“Big Rigg” Waiver Wire Pickups for Week #14
At the running back and wide receiver position, it may be time to finally cut bait with certain players. DeVante Parker simply hasn’t been getting it done for the Dolphins or your fantasy team, and you need to accept the fact that he belongs on your bench. Doug Martin missed week 13 and Peyton Barber exploded in his place, meaning it might be the end of the Doug Martin era in Tampa Bay. Jordy Nelson came up small yet again with Brett Hundley under center, however, he will get Aaron Rodgers back in week 15, so he might not be viable next week, but don’t cut him.
Blake Bortles is only 34% owned and came through in an easy matchup against the Colts this week, but the Jaguars are home against Seattle week 14 which poses a problem, even with their depleted secondary. Bortles is capable of coming through, but only if the matchup is right. Even though he got it done this past week, he simply can’t be trusted. Case Keenum has been getting it done as of late, however, he has a tough matchup against the Panthers this week. If you have been streaming Keenum over the last few weeks, you may want to consider an alternative option. All ownership percentages referenced throughout this article are according to Yahoo.
Jimmy Garoppolo – QB San Francisco 49ers – 16% Owned – Jimmy G is widely available throughout fantasy leagues and although he didn’t throw any TD’s against the Bears on Sunday, he did have 293 yards through the air, giving new life to the 49ers receivers. Over the next two weeks, the 49ers will face off against Houston and Tennessee, making him an extremely viable streaming option at the QB position. However, the 49ers have the Jaguars week 16, so if you do plan on rolling Jimmy G out there for the next two weeks, make sure you don’t leave yourself hanging for week 16.
Josh McCown – QB NY Jets – 41% Owned – McCown has been featured in several of my waiver columns throughout the year, including last week, and he definitely delivered if you picked him up and played him against the Chiefs this week. McCown shredded the Chiefs for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. Both Jermaine Kearse and Robby Anderson have really been clicking with McCown lately and he continues to get it done even at his “advanced” age. The Jets are @ Denver week 14 who will get Aqib Talib back. However, the Broncos are out of it and are playing horrible football as of late. Even with the “No Fly Zone” limiting passing attacks yardage wise, they are still giving up a healthy number of rushing touchdowns over the last few weeks.
Andy Dalton – QB Cincinnati Bengals – 54% Owned – The Bengals are home against the Bears week 14, but follow that up with a matchup with the Vikings week 15. Dalton has been coming through lately, and if you need him for one more week, you should be alright. The Bears didn’t surrender a passing TD to Jimmy Garoppolo last week but he did throw for 293 yards against them. Prior to week 13, the Bears gave up 1 TD to Brett Hundley, 2 TD’s to Matt Stafford and 3 to Carson Wentz.
Jameis Winston – QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 49% Owned – Winston did not look pretty out there on Sunday fumbling several times losing one, but he did come through with 18.60 fantasy points, throwing for 270 and 2 TD’s. Although his performance didn’t give you a warm feeling inside, the Bucs are home against Detroit week 14 so he should be able to come through. Winston has a favorable schedule from here on out (Lions, Falcons and Panthers) so as long as he stays healthy, you should feel good about using him.
Theo Riddick – RB Detroit Lions – 40% Owned – @ Tampa Bay week 14 had 14 total touches against the Ravens for 62 yards and a TD. Tion Green handled some short yardage work, seeing 11 carries for 51 yards and a TD, but that’s partially because Dwayne Washington was out as well. Tion Green is 6′ and 220 pounds so he has the frame and strength to be an every down back, but the knock on him is that he lacks quickness and ability to change direction, losing too much speed when he does so. I am not sure if Green will have any roles once Abdullah returns. Green is on the team because of his special teams ability.
Aaron Jones – RB Green Bay Packers – 35% Owned – Week 14 was Jones’ first week back from injury and he failed to touch the ball until the overtime period where he proceeded to rip off a 20 yard touchdown run for the win. Jones was the clear-cut better back before he was injured, so it is unclear whether the Packers will continue to roll Jamaal Williams out there or go back to Jones. If you are a Williams owner, or you are struggling at the running back position, adding Jones may be worth your roster space.
Marlon Mack – RB Indianapolis Colts – 23% Owned – The Colts play @ Buffalo week 14 who have been giving up huge numbers to opposing running backs not named Kareem Hunt. The Colts took another loss this week, and they keep getting closer to evaluation mode. If you have the space on your bench, sneak Mack on there, because he could be a difference maker down the stretch.
Peyton Barber – RB Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 5% Owned – In a surprise move, the Bucs started Peyton Barber on Sunday and fed him the rock 23 times in Doug Martin’s absence. Barber ripped off 102 rushing yards and added 4 grabs for 41 yards. In last week’s waiver article I did recommend adding Barber with Doug Martin concussed, but I didn’t see this amount of volume coming his way. If he’s still out there in your league, you should get him, especially if you’re a Doug Martin owner.
Matt Breida – RB San Francisco 49ers – 5% Owned – If you are a Carlos Hyde owner and don’t have a stable of backup RB’s behind him, just stop being cute and pick up Matt Breida. The 49ers offense finally looks like it has some juice now with Jimmy G under center and if Carlos Hyde were to go down, Breida could save you in the fantasy playoffs.
Elijah McGuire – RB NY Jets – 4% Owned – McGuire was involved early in the Chiefs game and then he seemed to disappear, getting caught up in the 3 headed monster which is the Jets backfield. Although McGuire didn’t play enough snaps to be relevant, the fact is that he’s the youngest running back on the Jets roster and the only one without at least a minor health issue at this time. If Forte and/or Powell were to miss time, McGuire’s value will go through the roof.
Kenyan Drake – RB Miami Dolphins – 68% Owned – When the Dolphins traded Jay Ajayi to the Eagles I didn’t really like either of the remaining Dolphins running backs for fantasy. However, I said if you need to pick between Damien Williams and Kenyan Drake, go with Drake because he has more speed. Drake has proceeded to display big play ability and on Sunday he ripped off 23 carries for 120 yards and a TD and added 3 grabs for 21 yards off 5 targets. Drake is likely only available in shallower leagues, but you never know, he might be there so it’s worth a look.
Marquise Goodwin – WR San Francisco 49ers – 32% Owned – Goodwin is clearly benefiting from Jimmy G’s recent promotion to the starting job and is coming off an 8 catch, 99 yard performance off 8 targets. This week, Goodwin goes up against the Houston Texans who have had a lot of trouble covering the big play, so he’s a good bet to come through. Although Goodwin is known as a deep threat receiver, on Sunday Jimmy G was looking for him on short and intermediate routes as well.
Trent Taylor – WR San Francisco 49ers – 0% Owned – Trent Taylor is not a special athlete by any means, but he’s a decent slot receiver and has good hands. Now that Jimmy G is under center, Taylor is going to have a consistent QB dishing the ball to him which should enhance his value somewhat in PPR leagues as he’s a good bet to log 10 fantasy points per game from here on out. Taylor had 6 catches off 6 targets for 92 yards on Sunday. Taylor broke free for a long run after catch on one of his grabs, and he’s not likely to do that every week, so the yardage totals might not always be this high.
Josh Doctson – WR Washington Redskins – 47% Owned – Doctson is looking more and more like a one trick pony. All Doctson seems to do is come down with jump balls for touchdowns. Albeit Doctson hasn’t been blowing up, he is still getting targeted downfield, and all he needs to do is haul in one long one to come through. Doctson is an ascending talent playing with a solid quarterback, both of which indicate the arrow is point up for Josh Doctson.
Jermaine Kearse – WR NY Jets – 45% Owned – Jermaine Kearse exploded onto the week 13 scene with 9 catches for 157 yards on 10 targets. Before the Monday night game, Kearse currently sits at WR21 on the season, just ahead of Mike Evans. Kearse doesn’t usually come through with these explosive efforts, but he is a viable option playing with Josh McCown who has been getting it done.
Donte Moncrief – WR Indianapolis Colts – 25% Owned – Moncrief was targeted 8 times, hauling in 5 of them for 37 yards. Although Moncrief didn’t come through, he was heavily targeted on Sunday by Brissett for the first time all season. This is something to monitor down the stretch as the Jaguars are the toughest matchup the Colts will face all year and Moncrief is always a touchdown threat.
Buffalo Bills Wide Receivers – Deonte Thompson and Zay Jones were targeted a combined 15 times and only hauled in 4 of them. That’s gross. Both are widely available, but I just can’t bring myself to recommend picking up a players with such bad catch rates.
Leonte Carroo – WR Miami Dolphins – 0% Owned – Keep an eye on practice reports out of Miami this week. DeVante Parker has been so horrible lately, they may look to evaluate younger talent. If they do, Caroo is a 6’1″ 215 pound athlete that might get some run. On the season, Carroo only has 7 catches for 69 yards and on his career, he only has 10 catches for 98 yards and 1 TD. Although his stats aren’t anything special, he simply hasn’t gotten the opportunity to play. The fact is that Carroo was a 3rd round pick out of Rutgers in 2016, he’s only 23 years old and the Dolphins may want to evaluate what they have in him if they decide that DeVante Parker’s time in Miami is over.
Corey Coleman – WR Cleveland Browns – 39% Owned – Corey Coleman didn’t have a catch against the Chargers this week but that could be attributed to the fact that his quarterback was running for his life and Coleman was up against some of the best corners in the NFL. Although Coleman is coming off a dud and now has to compete with Josh Gordon for targets, the Browns play vs Green Bay in week 14 who have given up the 3rd most fantasy points to wide receivers on the year.
Chris Hogan – WR New England Patriots – 75% Owned – In a 10 team league that I am in, Chris Hogan popped up on the waiver wire. Check your waiver wire to make sure somebody didn’t cut him. I understand he’s been slow to return from his shoulder injury, but when he comes back he’s a WR2.
Stephen Anderson – TE Houston Texans – 0% Owned – After CJ Fiedorowicz went down with his second concussion of the season, Anderson took over and hauled in 5 balls for 79 yards and a TD off 12 targets. Tom Savage is Anderson’s quarterback, so I am not terribly excited about adding him, but if you have no other options, he might work out for you.
Gerald Everett – TE LA Rams – 0% Owned – This is only a keeper/dynasty recommendation. Everett is a stud athlete, especially at the tight end position, and Sean McVay really featured the tight end in Washington. 2017 is Everett’s red-shirt year. Look for Everett, who had one grab for a 7 yard TD this week, to break out in 2018.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins – TE NY Jets – 57% Owned – ASJ is the 12th most targeted tight end in the league through 13 weeks even though he missed a few games to start the year due to a suspension and he has the Broncos in week 14. ASJ has been coming up small lately, but things are setting up well for a bounce back performance as McCown will likely need to distribute the ball to the backs and tight end given the tough matchups the wide receivers will see.
