“Z-Man’s Thoughts” Waiver Wire Hitters Week 16

As baseball has now started back up in the second half this week we are going to look at the hottest hitters that are owned in less than 50% of your leagues. As we move forward I will look back farther than just the past seven days as their stats can be skewed with a good weekend or series. I believe these targets can have more value than just one great series. All stats below will be the hitters’ stats over the past week.

My favorite out of this list would have to be Garrett Cooper, over the past month hes been hitting over .300 AVG with 5 HR and an OPS over .900. The dual eligibility helps with the flexibility to plug him in your lineup. If he’s available in your league and you need an OF 4 or 5 then I recommend Cooper. My second favorite of this group is Kike Hernandez. The reason is that Chris Taylor just went on the IL this week and will be out 4-6 weeks. The Dodgers are known for having players that can play at multiple positions, but I think Kike will be the guy they will plug in the most. Franco is probably the guy I trust least in this group, I am not a Franco believer and I do not expect his great week to continue long term.

This is the third week in a row that a catcher finds his way to this list. Travis has been hitting with some pop (6 HR) over the past month. He is probably my third favorite catcher out of the ones we have covered. I think he should be owned if you are in a 12 team league or AL only. I don’t foresee him becoming the top catcher that he was touted to be as he was coming through the minors, but he can be useful to your fantasy team. Brandon Crawford is quietly having a great week, I would not own him long term though if you need help at SS due to an injury I would consider him. Tyler O’Neill is the guy I want to own in this grouping. The power is legit, but the playing time is not consistent. I think if he could get full playing time and play out a season, we would get lots of home runs and not a terrible average to pair along with it.
